Course enrollment in a new academic system can be confusing, but VISP is here to help. Use the VISP Course Enrollment Guide and the following instructions to help guide your course enrollment process.
Full-time Enrollment Requirement
Remember that F-1 and J-1 visa holders must enroll full-time for their academic level. Review our Full-time Enrollment website, and check with your VISP advisor if you have any questions.
Course Search & Enroll Timeline
Course schedules are released and appear in the Course Search & Enroll tool on the following timeline:
Fall courses appear in March for enrollment in April
Spring courses appear in October for enrollment in November
Summer courses appear in January for enrollment in April
When should I enroll?
As soon as your enrollment time comes. Each day, more and more students will be given access to the course enrollment system. You’ll have the most choice of available courses the sooner you begin enrolling.
English as a Second Language Classes
Interested in taking an ESL class while you’re here? You will need to take the mandatory ESLAT exam the week before classes start in the fall or spring term.
Course Search & Enroll
- Prospective students: While you cannot enroll yet, you can use the public course search tool http://public.enroll.wisc.edu to start researching course options prior to your admission.
Log in at my.wisc.edu. Select the Academic Navigator widget, then select the Course Search & Enroll widget.
- Search for classes using:
Keyword — Enter a topic of interest like “economy,” “language,” or “Wisconsin” to see classes that use that keyword.
Subject area — View classes in a specific academic subject, like “Geography” or “Scandinavian Studies.”
Filter — Fine-tune results using filters like level or number of credits.
- Add a class to your cart: When you’ve found a class that matches your interests and academic plan, add it to your Cart. This checks whether you are eligible to take this class, and groups classes in a convenient place until you’re ready to enroll.
- Choose sections:
Open the sections panel of each class to select your sections.
- View your Cart:
Select the “My Courses” tab at the top of the screen, or select. As you added courses to your Cart, the campus’s enrollment system has checked that you are eligible to take these courses. An alert icon will show if any classes in your cart have validation errors that will prevent you from enrolling.
- “Problems with course” and “Sections not chosen” validation messages:
When there is a reason why you can’t go forward with enrollment, you’ll see a validation message to help you make a change. Common situations include not meeting the requisites for the class, needing permission to take the class, or exceeding the number of credits allowed in the term. Questions about how to ask permission to enroll? See our VISP Course Enrollment Guide.
- Wait list:
If a section is full and a wait list is available, continue to enroll in the class to secure your spot on the wait list.
- Once your enrollment time comes, Enroll:
Enrolling officially adds you to this class (or to this class’s wait list, if you’ve selected this option). It also checks for additional eligibility issues that need correcting before you can enroll.
“Enrollment failed” messages:
Weren’t able to enroll due to a prerequisite or other issue? Read our VISP Course Enrollment Guide for your next steps, or check out the Registrar’s Enrollment Help Desk website.
